Little Nemo : From Page to Stage

6 October, 2017

Erratum: an earlier version of the RESEO newsletter referred the production of animated film of Little Nemo. This was incorrect. An animated film based on the second movement of David Chaillou’s first symphony will be released in December 2017.

The composer David Chaillou (France) has created his first young audiences opera Little Nemo. The production has been staged 23 times so far at Dijon, Nantes and Angers (Diffusion France-musique) with the soprano Chloé Brio (Pinocchio Aix-en-Provence 2017) in the lead role.

Little Nemo was inspired by the classic comic strip Little Nemo in Slumberland by Winsor McCay, which appeared in the New York Herald and New York American between 1905 and 1914, then between 1924 and 1926.

David Chaillou has been fascinated by the graphic universe and the reverie of the comic strip since childhood. “I have always associated Little Nemo with the sounds, echoes, incongruous noises that accompanied the wonders and the fears of the character in his journey to Slumberland “. Through this international creation, David Chaillou and the librettists seek to stress the need to “re-enchant the world”. Can reality be inspired by the world of dreams? How can we transcribe childhood dreams into our world? In McCay’s comic book each dream has a meaning, thus giving the little boy’s subconscious a voice as well as psychoanalysis and their interpretation.

An animated film, directed by Grégoire Pont and based on the second movement of David Chaillou’s first symphony (production Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Denmark), will be released in
December 2017.
