About

RESEO

We are a network of organisations and individuals dedicated to education, participation and social transformation through opera, music and dance.

RESEO provides a platform for international cultural practitioners and artists who believe in the transformative potential of opera, music and dance practice. Through training, research, international collaboration and advocacy, we work to place education and participation at the heart of cultural institutions and policy.

We

BELIEVE

that

Artistic practice has the power to transform individuals, societies and our relationship with the environment.

Participation in culture is a fundamental expression of human dignity and a cornerstone of democratic life.

Communities are more than audiences: they are active creators and shapers of culture.

Cultural institutions are living spaces that can drive societal change.

HISTORY

RESEO was founded in 1996 to connect the emerging education departments of major European opera houses. Initiated by Bernard Foccroulle (Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie), the network began as a response to the professional isolation of practitioners and the need to strengthen a new field of creative learning. Eleven institutions (Théâtre Royal de La Monnaie, Opéra National de Paris, Staatsoper Stuttgart, Het Muziektheater Amsterdam, Den Norske Opera & Ballett, Gran Teatre del Liceu, Glyndebourne, English National Opera, Royal Opera House, Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera) came together to share practice and build a more inclusive future for opera as an art form.

Over time, the network expanded its scope to include a wider range of organisations and practitioners in opera, music and dance committed to creative learning and cultural participation.

From its initial focus on audience development, the network has grown into a broader movement for cultural participation and social transformation through artistic practice. Today, RESEO supports a vision of opera, music and dance that is accessible, inclusive and shaped through dialogue with communities.
