Belgium
The Antwerp Symphony Orchestra is the symphony orchestra of Flanders and Belgium, having the world-renowed Queen Elisabeth Hall as its home base. The orchestra is led by honorary conductor Philippe Herreweghe, and emeritus conductor Jaan van Zweden. It performs several concert each year in prestigious Belgian and international concert venues.
Aims
Besides its regular concerts, the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra continues to develop its extensive range of educational and social projects, with which the orchestra takes children, young adults, and people from diverse backgrounds, on a journey through the world of symphonic sound. Profiling projects such as Re-mix, audio books, concerts for all ages and the opMaatorkest give the orchestra a unique position within the Belgian cultural landscape, as the first orchestra that gave the broad impact of classical music an important place in its operations.
The orchestra also nurtures young talent, giving (very) young musicians the opportunity to evolve within a youth orchestra or the orchestra academy. The orchestra supplements these educational activities with an unique outreach ambition, actively eliminating any obstacles to concert visits, for Antwerp chilren in vulnerable positions, for example.
A flagship project
opMaatorkest offers children from Antwerp primary schools the chance to discover classical music at school and learn how to play an instrument in a group.
