What is opera for children?

A playwright, teacher, curator and scriptwriter, Karen specialises in multi-disciplinary creative arts, particularly performing arts, visual arts and digital arts for new audiences. She holds a PhD and MA in Education from the UFF, an MA in Theatre Studies (Sorbonne Paris 3), a specialisation in Children’s and Young People’s Literature (UCAM), an MA in Creative Media (ECO-UFRJ-PPGMC) and a BA in Social Communication from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (ECO – UFRJ). She has published 19 books, several of which have won awards. She has been the creator, curator and general manager of the Festival international d’échanges linguistiques (FIL) for 20 years. She develops screenplays, series (2DLAB), feature films, operas and musicals.

Aims:

The FIL contributes to raising awareness, training, humanist values and the recognition of childhood as a symbolic place of great importance in our lives, which deserves to be treated with excellence and attention in the various artistic languages devoted to it. Opera, a legacy of European culture, is gradually blending into Brazilian culture, with new audiences, repertoires and formats as its fundamental partners.

A flagship project:

The FIL has always been a multicultural meeting place, and this year is no exception. Renowned artists, performers and professionals from different countries will be on hand to share their unique perspectives and contribute to the richness of the programme. We are organising artist residencies and creative projects between Brazil and other countries, such as the operas Fedegunda and Bem no meio (link above), as well as other activities such as workshops and bi-national artist meetings. In 2025, we will be organising a Focus France (Year of Brazil in France and France in Brazil).
