For a people's opera
Opéra Montmartre is a non-profit, community-based project that aims to make opera accessible to everyone by renewing its approach. Through various initiatives, Opéra Montmartre hopes to help spread culture to a new, more diverse audience, offer new prospects to young people through training courses and workshops in secondary schools, while strengthening local social ties around culture. Finally, Opéra Montmartre aims to seduce, delight and move a new generation with the masterpieces of the past, presented in an original way in shorter, more expressive formats without losing any of their musical and dramatic qualities.
Aims
Education is an integral part of our project. We use our programming to provide opportunities for young talent and to create workshops and master classes where students can immerse themselves in opera under real conditions. But our project goes beyond that: we also intervene in secondary schools to open up other professional possibilities for students, introducing them to an art form and a discipline that could transform their lives. Our founding president Nicholas McRoberts took part in the “Dix Mois autour de l’école et de l’opéra” initiative in 2000 with the support of the Opéra de Paris. He took part in several opera recitals given in Priority Education Zones. Since then, he has been convinced of the usefulness, and even the necessity, of introducing opera to young people who are far removed from this art form, in order to enrich the French musical landscape.
